Cuba 2004 Study Tour Experience!
As our travels began with a nights stop over in Japan, we managed to enjoy a superb dining experience of Tepanyaki and a Shiatsu massage before retiring for the night!
Our next stop was Cancun, Mexico. Unfortunatly our timing was off for our two night stay along the coast of this very popular holiday destination, as we had to share this location with many young American, Canadian and British students enjoying their spring break. We did however enjoy the blue skys and water , and enjoyed an incredible Mexican feast of nachos, tacos, shrimp buritos and frozen magaritas to die for!
Next stop - Havana, Cuba. What an amazing atmospheric city! Words would only depreciate the charm this unique city offers. It was easy to imagine the beauty this city would have once held in its prime.
We stayed in the well know Hotel Plaza where Ernest Hemingway stayed on countless occassions.
We enjoyed our couple of days in Havana site seeing and experiencing some local cultures - Salsa and the local refreshment Mojitos were definatly on the agenda!!
After a two hour flight and a three hour drive through Cuban country life, we arrived at "Hotel Amigo" at Quardalavaca in the south of Cuba. The sands were fine and white, sky blue and free from clouds, the water crystal and coloured the most gorgeous aqua you have ever seen - this picturesque Caribbean coastline had the beauty only ever captured on the glossy side of a post card! This was the best therapy anyone could offer!
During our eight day stay in Quardalavaca, we travelled each day to Holguin were the World Congress was being held. Holguin is also the home of were our translator and good friend Eduardo lives. We were fortunate enough to be able to help Eduardo celebrate his birthday with his family and friends, and we were grateful for his and his families generous hospitality.
This is Colin Cassimatis a graduate from ESTT presenting one of his papers to a global audience. Colin has a Diploma of Health Science in Remedial Therapies and a Diploma of Health Science in Medical Massage. Colin presented two papers at the congress, one being on Paediatric Tuina, and the other on Pallative Care and Massage.
Another graduate of ESTT Emily Mahon who also has a Diploma of Health Science in both Remedial Therapies and Medical Massage and is also currenlty completing the Diploma of Health Science in Clinical Aromatherapy. Emily choose to present her paper on Rotator Cuff Tendinopathy - Treatment with Remedial Massage.
The Principal and Founder of ESTT, Associate Professor Raymond Carroll also attended and presented at the Congress. Raymond was also given the honour of conducting a speech at the Congress Opening Ceremony.
We were also fortunate enough to be taken to a Natural Medicine Hospital in Holguin were they had a Traditional Chinese Medicine department, and Aromatherapy and Colour Therapy department. Here we can see the Physiotherapy department were this young lady is being treated.
This experinece to Cuba has been one that won't be forgotten by Associate Professor Raymond Carroll, Emily Mahon, Colin Cassimatis and another student Jessica Timmons. Cuba has such a unique Health Care system that acknowledges and repects all forms of therapy and intergrates these therapies for optimal results.
We are all looking forward to the next study tour to Cuba in 2006 and invite anyone else who is interested as well - whether you are an ESTT student or not you are all welcome to attend.
